A Capability Statement is often the starting point in getting interest from the government in products and services a contractor has available. It is often a vital piece of information that is either not available, or compiled in a way that does not invoke customer interest. As such, all contractors should have a concise capability statement, so that any potential customer can see the merits and benefits the contractor can provide.

Guidelines

The statement

The statement itself, should be short and to the point, One or two pages max. A 10 or 15 page statement will lose the reader, and because it is long, will not emphasis important capabilities. It should be format based, so all procurements, departments, and individuals follow the same pratice.

Capability Presentation

Best practice is to have a capability presentation, in addition to a statement, so that it will be available for presentation and discussion to potential clients. It should be limited to 10 pages.

This is a summary of a firm’s technical and business expertise and skills that details its performance history and the specific projects it has undertaken, lists awards and other honors it has earned, and provides the resumes of its key management personnel. Because a capability statement is a resume for the firm, it should be regularly updated so that it can be furnished on short notice to prospective federal and private sector buyers.
